Self-Massage/Abhyanga
Abhyanga, or self-massage, is a traditional Ayurvedic practice, that I first got introduced to by my naturopath when I was getting treatment for PTSD. After a traumatic event, your mind sometimes disassociates itself from the body to protect itself. Self-massage is a great way to get back into your body, soothe the nervous system, and provide some self-care. It’s great for anyone who wants to slow down, feel more relaxed, and in touch with themself. I frequently recommend it to clients who have been feeling scattered and ungrounded.
Lately I’ve been practicing it twice weekly to chill tf out, and slow down my pace. I share my tips below, but feel free to make this your own, with whatever time and resources you have. Try it with a partner, or even give yourself a 2 minute hand massage at your desk, and feel the difference a little embodiment makes.
