Wellness Things I’m Loving Lately
While the wellness industry is estimated globally at $1.5 trillion, most of my daily practices and tools cost little to no money, and are simple additions to your everyday.
Wellness is meant for everyone. Practices that can be done consistently will give you the most long-lasting change over time. Instead of quickly implementing a full new lifestyle routine that doesn’t fit with where you’re at, I like to make small adjustments that create positive shifts that can be maintained over time.
Below, I share five things that add to my daily routines and support my consistent shift into a more joyful and nourishing life.
F.lux & Night Shift
A good night’s sleep is one of my top wellness hacks, as it allows me to live healthfully during my days. When I’m not rested, I don’t want to eat salads, I have a hard time focusing at work, and don’t have energy for everything I want to do. Enter F.lux, a free add-on that adjusts your computer brightness and tone depending on the time of day. Of course, it would be easier to say no to all blue lights hours before bedtime, but that’s not practical (or fun) for me at this moment in time, so F.lux is the next best thing for supporting my circadian system ensuring sound sleeps
If you have an iPhone, you can go into your Display & Brightness settings to achieve the same benefit with your cell
Herbal Tea
Especially in the warmer months, we want to be keeping our bodies warm and nourished. Each herbal tea has its benefits (better sleep, digestion, slowing aging), so you can choose your beverage based on your desired outcomes. My current fav is buckwheat tea, it has a mild flavour, feels like a warm hug, and supports immunity health, among other things. Choose a tea that feels good for you, ideally one without caffeine so you can drink whenever you desire some extra nourishment.
Pop into your local Asian store to find Buckwheat tea, as it’s hard to source online, but get curious and try some out whenever you see a flavour that interests you. Tea bags can be super affordable. I like to have many boxes on the go to suit my mood. I always look at different grocery stores and pick up some to try. Past winners have been sage tea from a European store, and hibiscus ones from Latin markets.
Short Workouts
One of my daily priorities is moving my body, and I’ve grown to love a quick 25-30-minute home workout. There are plenty of free classes on YouTube, but my favourite is Melissa Wood Health. You can sign up for a free trial online, and she offers an affordable monthly rate. Choose any workout that you love, or at least are curious enough about to keep trying, so you’ll want to continue coming back to your practice and making it into a habit.
Incense
Smell has an amazing way of transporting us to different moods. Stress is the biggest killer, so why not light up a stick of incense and chill out for a bit? I’ll light one before getting into work mode, when I want to unwind at the end of the day, or during my morning meditation. The Satya Vanilla scent is my current fav, and everyone who smells it instantly becomes obsessed.
If you want to add some relaxation to your incense experience, settle in with some warm tea and simply watch the smoke rise and wander around your space, letting your thoughts go with it.
Outlive - The Science & Art of Longevity
This is my #1 book of the year and has changed my approach to wellness. Whenever you want to change something in your life, first educate yourself in the area, this could be money, sex, or in this case, physical health. It can feel like punishment to do things we don’t want to do. Instead, create a strong why through understanding so you’ll naturally want to take action instead of forcing yourself arbitrarily. Read this book if you’re interested in living a longer and better life, or read another in an area you’re curious about to set yourself up for positive changes in the future.
I love to read but often don’t prioritize it, so I intentionally set a timer for ~11 minutes in the morning or in the evening before bed to create more time to read.
