Who Do You Want to Be?
While I love defining our values to guide us in the right life direction, the easiest thing you can do to live the life you dream of is simply doing the things you desire in the moment. These are the things that make life special, the ones that we spend more time thinking about than saying yes to and truly living.
One unseasonably warm day, my friend and I biked to Toronto Island with no intention to swim. The sun was shining, there was no one around, and before I knew it, she had stripped off her clothes and jumped into the water. I sat back in shock, sweating in my clothes and wishing I was in the water too, but held back as I was scared someone would see and judge us.
My friend was so free and happy in the water, and I realized that I would probably never get the opportunity to skinny dip in front of the CN Tower again, and would I want to die without living this? So I too took off my clothes and jumped in, and have been living with this new sense of aliveness every since.
When questioning whether or not to do the thing, don't stress about not having enough time, or what people might think, simply do the things that will create memories and make your life worth living. Since implementing this mantra, I've become a girlie who wakes up to watch the sunrise with people I love, someone who orders at least one dessert, if not two, to savour and enjoy, and a person who says yes to the invitations that scare me.
Life has become so much more pleasurable now that I feel free to say yes to the things I desire, without waiting for someone else's permission.
Applying this to your own life could mean hitting that workout class you've been too intimidated to try, voicing your opinion at work when it differs from your teams, or posting the instagram story sharing your opinion despite fears of what others will think.
